High Voltage Name Servers

What is a Name Server?
When someone visits your website, they type into their web browser only your domain name, like http://www.hvchat.com . Your web browser needs to know exactly where that website is on the Internet. Your web browser will ask a nameserver where that website is (in this case, it's at 216.38.138.2 ).

Email works the same way. When you send an email to email@domainanme.com , your email software needs to know where domainanme.com is located on the Internet.

A nameserver translates the names into IP Addresses (groups of four numbers, such as 216.38.138.2 ).

Do I need a Name Server?
Yes. Every domain needs a name server. Many domain name registrars provide name server services to anyone who has regsitered their domain name with them. High Voltage Internet also provide a name server for our clients.

How do I configure by domain to use a Name Server?
This depends on whether you will be using your registrar's name server or High Voltage Internet's name server.

For clients using their registrar's name server, use the registrar's domain name management tool and set each field to the appropriate IP address. These fields may have names like "Address" and "Mail Exchanger", or they may use codes such as "A" and "MX". In any case, use the values that were provided to you when you signed up for your High Voltage Internet account. If you have not been given different values, you can use 216.38.138.2 for all entries.

For clients using High Voltage Internet's name servers, you will have to inform your registrar that you are doing so. Using your registrar's domain name management tool, configure nameserver as ns1.hvinternet.com . If your registrar requires two nameservers, you may use ns2.hvinternet.com as the second name server.

What if I am no longer using High Voltage Internet to host my web page?
Unless you have a special arrangement, we will stop providing name server services for your domain name once your hosting account is terminated. You will have to tell your registrar about your new name servers.

Can I have more than one domain?
Yes. But, you must notify High Voltage Internet of each domain name you wish us to recognize, whether or not your are using our name server. This is so we can configure our webserver, email server, and domain name server to recognize your domains.
